Papier Mâché Workshots at Centro de Salud, Getafe, Madrid
Starting in 2024, CartAnima is collaborating with the Getafe Ayuntamiento to offer two Papier Mâché workshops as part of the Arte y Salud program created by the Centro Municipal de Salud.
One workshop will be offered for adults and another for adolescents. Both offered every two weeks on Fridays for two hours starting at 5pm.

Working with paper mache is a slow medium for creating art that involves several phases (creating a shape, wallpapering, detailing and painting), and often requires drying time between them in order to continue. At the same time, its gradual and calm nature makes it an ideal medium for therapy. The process of applying paper mache is meditative and intimate, requiring direct contact with the medium with very infrequent use of tools. The artist literally strokes each paper into place and watches the piece emerge step by step with many opportunities for corrections during the process to arrive at a unique and personal piece. The most beautiful thing about this medium is that its beauty is in the imperfections of the result which has a very organic and natural effect.

Every year starting in 2022, between October and May, Diego Ramallo will lead a papier mâché workshop on Thursdays between 18:00 and 20:00. No previos experience necessary. 26 2-hr sessions for €78.90.

- Just Begin: Sculpting with Papier-mâché
Explore the basics of papier-mâché while developing your very own (unpainted) creation. This is a two-part workshop to allow for drying time, each three hours. Join any Sunday to start; join any Sunday to finish. This workshop, or past experience with the medium, is a prerequisite to the advanced papier-mâché workshop below.

Become a paper master! Create a one-of-a-kind sculpture using advanced papier-mâché techniques with the guided assistance of an experienced paper master. Come with your own idea or develop one with the instructor. He will then guide you through the entire process to overcome obstacles and develop a finished (unpainted) product using tricks and techniques developed over years. “Just Begin: Sculpting with Papier-mâché” workshop or past experience with the medium is a prerequisite to this workshop.
When: Weekends as arranged with instructor.
Cost: $150 ($75 for Creator’s Space members) includes most materials (depending on piece), consulting, instruction and assistance as needed from concept to finish. Most medium size pieces take 15-20 hours over a month.
